Multi-shift operation at the BMW Group construction site in Lower Bavaria.

+++ Increasing efficiency through multi-shift operation +++ Start of a pilot project to upgrade agricultural land +++

In coordination with the Trade Inspection Office (Landshut) and the Planning Association (Strasskirchen-Irlbach), the BMW Group is expanding daily working hours for defined measures on the construction site of the future assembly plant for high-voltage batteries. This means that multi-shift operations from Monday to Saturday will be carried out until further notice.

In the largely completed first phase of setting up the construction site — creating and providing infrastructure and soil preparation — the coordination of work steps across industries ensured the high pace of implementation.

With the start of building construction, the processes that build on each other become even more complex. The delivery of prefabricated parts made of concrete (supports and, for example, escape tunnel elements) and steel (crossbeams) and their assembly in conjunction with soil strengthening and casting of the floor plates requires further optimized timing, systematic process organization and close coordination of the trades. The extended working time is an effective lever in increasing these efficiency potentials to maintain the compact overall construction period.

Requirements with regard to noise and light emissions are verified by external auditors using expert measurement methods.

The adjusted working time model relieves traffic during the day. Some of the logistics is relocated during off-peak hours. During peak hours, this relieves commuting on the B8 towards junction A92 in Plattling.

The adjustment of working hours is another efficiency measure in the course of plant construction, optimizes processes and logistics, ensures the ambitious construction schedule and thus the planned start of series operation.

BMW Group launches pilot project to upgrade agricultural land

In August, the BMW Group will spend the first 30,000 cubic meters of humus on a total of around 15 hectares of agricultural land in the vicinity of the emerging production site for high-voltage batteries in Irlbach-Strasskirchen. For the first time in Bavaria, in accordance with the amended Federal Soil Protection Ordinance, topsoil is not only being systematically relocated but also carefully applied at the new destination at a specified maximum height of 20 centimeters.

Alexander Kiy, Project Manager Plant Construction BMW Group High-Voltage Battery Assembly Irlbach-Strasskirchen: “With the pilot application, we are collecting valuable insights together with the Water Management Office that will benefit all major new construction projects in Bavaria in the future. ”

With this so-called soil functional compensation for the occupied area of the newly developed plot of land in the two municipalities, the BMW Group is making a contribution to increasing the water storage capacity of the upgraded areas. This improves the ability of nitrate retention and reduces the risk of flooding.

Following the piloting of the first areas this summer, accompanied by the authorities, the experience and findings of the process will be processed. The additional approximately 150,000 cubic meters of humus for a further 75 hectares that have been temporarily stored on the BMW Group property until then will be awarded to farmers from the region who have applied for acceptance and are qualified.
